Code of conduct
All attendees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and organizers at any Bay
Area Tech Talks event are required to follow this code of conduct.
Organizers will enforce it throughout every event.
The short version
Be kind. Be respectful. We are here to learn from each other. Harassment
and exclusionary behavior are not tolerated — and if something is wrong,
tell an organizer and we will help.
Who this applies to
This code of conduct applies to everyone in our community — attendees,
speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and organizers — in every space we run:
event venues, after-events, and our online channels (chat, social media,
and video).
What we expect
Be welcoming to people of all backgrounds and experience levels. Assume
good faith. Give and accept feedback graciously. Remember that there are
no stupid questions, and make room for others in conversation.
Unacceptable behavior
We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone,
regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual
orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity,
religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to those
characteristics; sexual language or imagery in public spaces; deliberate
intimidation, stalking, or following; harassing photography or recording;
sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical
contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.
Anyone asked to stop any harassing behavior is expected to comply
immediately.
Speakers
Speakers should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material
in their talks, and should aim for talks that are welcoming to a broad
technical audience.
Reporting
If you experience or witness a violation — or anything that makes you
uncomfortable — please contact an organizer in person at the event, or
email [email protected].
Reports reach the organizers, led by Salar Rahmanian, and are handled
confidentially. If a report concerns an organizer, that person recuses
themselves from handling it. We can help you contact venue staff, arrange
a safe way home, or otherwise support you — whatever you need to feel safe.
Enforcement
We use a graduated response, at the organizers' discretion:
- Correction — a private word about the behavior.
- Warning — a formal warning; continued behavior has further
consequences. - Temporary ban — removal from the current event and a period away
from our spaces. - Permanent ban — a ban from all future events.
Serious violations may skip these steps and result in immediate removal
from the event or a ban from future events.
